Getting Your Mini Digger Ready for Winter
British winters are hard on plant. A little preparation keeps your mini digger starting first time and working through the cold months.
Fuel and fluids
- Use winter-grade diesel where available and keep the tank topped up to reduce condensation.
- Check antifreeze concentration in the coolant — it protects against freezing and corrosion.
- Make sure hydraulic and engine oils are at the correct grade for cold operation.
Battery and starting
Cold saps battery power. Check the battery is healthy and the terminals are clean and tight. If the machine stands for long periods, an isolator or trickle charge helps.
Tracks and greasing
Clear mud from the tracks before it freezes solid, and keep all pivot points well greased — water washes grease out, so grease more often in wet weather.
Storage
Where possible, store under cover on firm ground with the bucket lowered. Protect exposed rams and keep the cab dry.
Stock up on filters, fluids and wear parts before the cold sets in.
