1-Tonne vs 3-Tonne Diggers for Domestic Groundwork

1-Tonne vs 3-Tonne Diggers for Domestic Groundwork

For domestic groundwork, the choice usually comes down to a 1-tonne or a 3-tonne mini digger. Both have their place — here is how to decide.

The 1-tonne digger

A 1-tonne (micro) digger is all about access. It fits through a standard 750mm gate, is light enough to tow easily and does minimal damage to lawns and driveways. It’s ideal for garden landscaping, small drainage runs and confined spaces. The trade-off is less dig depth, reach and lifting power.

The 3-tonne digger

A 3-tonne machine brings serious capability — deeper digging, more reach, more breakout force and the ability to handle bigger buckets and heavier lifting. It’s the better choice for foundations, larger drainage and any job where you’re moving real volume. The downside is size, weight and transport.

How to choose

  • Tight access, light work → 1 tonne.
  • Open sites, heavy digging → 3 tonne.
  • Mixed work → many owners settle on a 1.5 to 2 tonne machine as the all-rounder.
