Towing a Mini Digger: UK Trailer Weights & the B+E Licence

Getting your mini digger to site legally means understanding trailer weights and your driving entitlement. Getting it wrong risks a fine, points, and an invalid insurance policy.

Know your weights

Two figures matter: the operating weight of the digger and the MAM (maximum authorised mass) of the trailer. Add the trailer’s own weight to the machine and any buckets, and compare that against the trailer’s rated capacity — never exceed it.

What your licence allows

Rules changed in late 2021: most drivers who passed their car test can now tow trailers up to a combined limit without a separate B+E test, but the exact entitlement depends on when you passed and your vehicle. Always check your own licence categories on the DVLA website before towing.

Braked vs unbraked trailers

A 1-tonne mini digger needs a braked plant trailer rated well above the machine’s weight. Unbraced trailers are limited to much lower weights and are rarely suitable for machines.

Loading safely

  • Load on firm, level ground with the ramps secure.
  • Track the machine on slowly and centre the weight over the axle.
  • Use rated lashing straps or chains at front and rear.
  • Check nothing fouls the number plate or lights.
