Choosing Your First Site Dumper: Payload, Tipping & Access
A site dumper is one of the best time-savers you can buy, but choosing your first one means balancing payload, tipping style and access.
Payload
Compact dumpers typically carry from around 500kg up to a tonne or more. Be honest about what you move most — overloading is unsafe and wears the machine, while an undersized dumper means more trips.
Tracked vs wheeled
Tracked dumpers spread their weight and handle soft, muddy ground and slopes well, making them popular for groundworks. Wheeled dumpers are quicker and more manoeuvrable on firm sites and hard standing.
Tipping style
Front tip is the standard and simplest. Some models offer high tip (to load skips or trailers) or swivel tip (to place material to the side). Choose the tip that matches how you actually load and unload.
Access first
As with diggers, measure your tightest access point before you buy. A dumper that can’t get where the material needs to go is no use, however good it is.
